A man drowned in Lake Washington after running from police and entering the water in Renton.

Officers were responding to a suspicious vehicle at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park just after noon Saturday, Aug. 30, when a man and woman left the car and tried to evade them by swimming into the lake, according to Renton Police.

Officers were able to pull the woman from the water and take her into custody. The 43-year-old man, however, slipped beneath the surface and drowned, police said.

The incident is being treated as an in-custody death, triggering a review by the Valley Independent Investigative Team. The Kent Police Department will lead the investigation.
