It’s the 24-hour burrito shack with the backwards drive-thru.
Burritos California, now open at 820 South 38th Street in Tacoma, is turning a former Burger Ranch building into a round-the-clock destination for Mexican comfort food.
The fast-growing chain, which also has locations in Lakewood, Marysville, Auburn, Seattle, and Kent, opened its Tacoma outpost last fall and hasn’t looked back.
As the name suggests, burritos are the main event here. Expect massive portions and more than 20 burrito options that give locals plenty of reasons to pull up hungry.
The menu features endless varieties, ranging from classic breakfast options to fully loaded, two-hands-required creations. Morning favorites include burritos packed with eggs, potatoes, and cheese, with choices like steak, bacon, ham, sausage, or chorizo.
There’s even a “crazy” breakfast burrito that piles on ham, sausage, and bacon in one wrap, along with a vegetarian option filled with peppers, onions, potatoes, and salsa.
For lunch and dinner, things get even bigger.
The “monster” burrito lives up to its name, stuffed with carne asada, rice, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. Another popular pick combines carne asada with French fries, guacamole, cheese, and sour cream — a West Coast staple for those in the know.
Seafood options like shrimp and fish burritos are also on the menu, along with the “mar y tierra,” which blends steak and shrimp with rice, vegetables, and cheese.
Beyond burritos, the restaurant offers a full lineup of Mexican favorites, including tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas, tortas, and birria plates. Desserts like churros, flan, tres leches cake, and fried ice cream round out the experience.
Sides like rice or beans are available by the half-pint.
One unexpected quirk has become part of the experience. While the drive-thru order box is on the driver’s side, the pickup window is on the passenger side — meaning solo drivers may find themselves leaning across the car to grab their food.
Early reviews suggest the food makes up for any awkward reach. “Chicken burrito. Delicious. Enough for 2 people,” one Yelp reviewer wrote, noting the portion size and value.
Another customer, who said they grew up eating Mexican food in Arizona, called the burritos “affordable, delicious, and authentic to a southwestern style burrito shop.”
