What makes a workplace great depends on who you ask—and when it comes to the best employers in Snohomish County, workers say there’s no single answer.

For some workers, it’s good pay and strong benefits. Others prioritize flexibility, supportive leadership, job security, or simply working alongside people they enjoy.

In an era of rising costs, burnout, and changing workplace expectations, many employees are reevaluating what they want from work.

To better understand what local workers value, Puget Press asked residents a simple question: “What’s the best employer you’ve worked for in Snohomish County, and why?”

The responses painted a picture of workplaces both large and small—from aerospace giants and transit agencies to family-owned businesses and local nonprofits.

Community Transit: Strong Benefits Continue To Stand Out

Headquartered in Snohomish County, Community Transit provides bus and commuter services throughout the region and is one of the county’s largest public employers.

One local worker kept their praise brief but direct.

“Community Transit. Good pay, benefits and pension!!” one commenter wrote.

Public-sector jobs often draw workers seeking stability, healthcare, and retirement benefits. Pensions, in particular, have become increasingly rare in the private sector, making them especially valuable to some employees.

Boeing: Among Best Employers In Snohomish County, Or Worst

No employer generated more nuanced responses than Boeing.

The aerospace giant employs tens of thousands of workers in Washington and remains one of the region’s most important employers. But workers suggested experiences can vary dramatically.

“Boeing is both the best and worst employer I’ve worked for,” one employee wrote. “Just depends on your manager, your shop and your team.”

Another commenter offered a simpler perspective.

“Boeing, because it’s the only employer I have ever worked for.”

The comments highlight a reality common at very large organizations: workplace culture can differ significantly between departments and supervisors.

Healthcare Costs Make Government Jobs Appealing

While some online discussions about government work can be critical, one county employee said affordable healthcare has made a major difference for their family.

“I know folks have horror stories about working for the county,” one commenter wrote. “But I have to say the ability to have family on health insurance for a rate we can afford has been a game changer.”

The worker contrasted their current benefits with previous private-sector employment.

“Working here is the first time I don’t skip regular preventative stuff because I can actually afford it,” they wrote.

Affordable healthcare remains a major concern for many workers nationwide, and benefits can sometimes outweigh differences in salary.

Scotts Miracle-Gro Earns Praise For Flexibility And Trust

Scotts Miracle-Gro is a major lawn and garden company with operations across the country.

One former employee described the workplace in glowing terms.

“Fantastic team, and management actually cared about you and your family and their well being,” they wrote.

The employee praised the company’s flexibility, bonuses, and workplace culture.

“You could take time off when needed, and they constantly gave out bonuses. Multiple times a year,” the commenter wrote.

They also highlighted the company’s trust-based culture.

“Just was an overall fantastic experience. So much freedom, a lot of trust, could make your own schedule.”

The employee noted one drawback: workers initially had to purchase their own health benefits before later gaining access to stronger coverage.

Family-Owned Businesses Leave Lasting Impressions

Several workers praised smaller employers where ownership played a direct role in culture.

One commenter said Paul Davis Restoration stood out despite the demanding work.

“It was hard work a lot of the time but the family who owned it was really nice,” they wrote.

Another worker fondly recalled their time at Remember When Antiques.

“The owner was kind, awesome regular customers, and I enjoyed learning about antiques from the dealers and collectors,” one commenter wrote.

The business later closed after changes to the building, according to the employee.

Meanwhile, one resident praised Wilcox Construction.

“Wilcox Construction, it was a great place until my divorce junked my head,” they wrote, suggesting personal circumstances rather than workplace issues shaped their experience.

Youth Jobs Can Offer Surprising Opportunities

Several commenters highlighted employers that can serve as valuable first jobs.

“Dwayne Lane’s was a great place to work,” one Reddit user wrote. “It’s a great first job for high schoolers willing to wash cars.”

Another commenter pointed to Dick’s Drive-In, though they noted they had not personally worked there.

“Sounds nuts but if you’re young and want help with college, Dick’s Drive-In has incredible benefits,” they wrote, citing tuition assistance and other perks.

Dick’s Drive-In has long been known in Washington for offering employee benefits that exceed what many expect from the fast-food industry.

Nostalgia For A Different Providence

Providence received perhaps the most bittersweet mention.

Providence operates one of Snohomish County’s major healthcare systems and remains a significant regional employer.

One commenter said the organization changed following mergers and corporate restructuring.

“Providence prior to building the new hospital and merging with Swedish/takeover, whatever,” one local resident wrote. “They were in a different tax code and not profit driven, but parent service driven. It was amazing.”

The commenter added: “Don’t think we’ll see any of those kinds of places to work anymore.”

Their perspective highlights how mergers and organizational changes can shape employee experiences over time.

What Workers Value Most

Across industries, several themes emerged repeatedly:

  • Strong health insurance
  • Retirement benefits and pensions
  • Flexible schedules
  • Supportive management
  • Respectful workplace culture
  • Career growth opportunities
  • Work-life balance
  • Trust and autonomy

The responses suggest there may be no single “best” employer in Snohomish County. Instead, workers appear to value employers that make them feel respected, supported, and able to build a life outside of work.
