Built in 1895, the property once served as a private home before later operating as a funeral home.

Listing photos reveal worn wood floors, peeling paint, aging stair railings, draped windows, antique furniture and dimly lit rooms that seem frozen in time.
Decorative touches such as arched doorways, wainscoting and fireplaces in every room hint at the mansion’s former grandeur, while years of wear leave little doubt the property needs significant restoration.
One photo in particular has drawn plenty of attention online.
At the end of a shadowy upstairs landing stands what initially appears to be a woman dressed in a long black gown and veil watching from the corner.
A closer look suggests the gown and hatted veil are hanging on a rack, but the illusion is convincing enough to make many viewers pause for a second glance.
Another unforgettable room features exposed brick walls, boarded-up windows, an uncovered toilet tucked into one corner and, just a few feet away, a children’s carousel-style horse standing alone in the shadows — an image that feels more like a movie set than a real estate listing.
Historic mansion seeks its next chapter
According to the listing, the property is listed on the Historic Registry and offers both residential and commercial zoning, opening the door to a variety of future uses.
The listing suggests the estate could once again become a private residence or be transformed into a bed-and-breakfast, event venue or another commercial venture.
While the home requires cosmetic restoration and a new HVAC system, the listing notes that a new roof was installed in 2024 and one of the two water heaters has already been replaced.
The home originally hit the market in May for $324,000 before seeing three price reductions to its current asking price of $265,000.
Locals share memories — and jokes
As photos of the home spread online, social media users couldn’t resist having a little fun with its haunting atmosphere.
“Gonna take deep pockets,” one person wrote.
“A younger me would love that project. That place is beautiful,” another commented.
Others shared personal connections to the building.
“This was my family’s business,” Jason Collins wrote. “Started in 1903 by my great-grandfather Charles Lexington Pace as CL Pace & Son… Papa Pace sold furniture in the front, had his mortuary in the back, and kept the caskets upstairs.”
Collins said the business later became Smith Brothers Funeral Home after relatives took over and moved operations into the mansion.
“I can’t believe that a paranormal center wasn’t viable in Marion, SC,” he joked.
Clay Spivey also recalled family ties to the property.
“My Lane grandparents had funerals there,” Spivey wrote. “My mother, born in 1925, remembered the family living there… She said the children had a wicker wagon pulled by a goat!!! The Downton Abbey of Marion.”
