An impaired driver is facing vehicular homicide charges after causing a double fatal crash on SR410 in Pierce County, police said.
The wreck happened near State Route 512 in Sumner at around 6 a.m. Sunday, July 27, according to the Washington State Patrol.
A vehicle was reported traveling north in the southbound lanes of SR 167. Before troopers could intercept, the driver entered westbound SR 410 traveling in the wrong direction—heading east—and slammed head-on into another vehicle just west of Valley Avenue, according to police.
The two occupants of the victim vehicle died at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released.
The driver of the wrong-way car was taken to a nearby hospital and is now in custody, facing charges of DUI vehicular homicide. Their name has not been released.
Westbound SR 410 was shut down for several hours while troopers and East Pierce Fire personnel responded and investigated. All westbound traffic was diverted to Valley Avenue with reentry at Traffic Avenue.
