Kroger will shutter its Fred Meyer store on Evergreen Way in Everett this fall, a move the company says is driven in part by theft and rising costs.
The Fred Meyer at 8530 Evergreen Way in Everett and another in Kent will both close in October, a Kroger spokesperson confirmed Monday, Aug. 18.
The company did not release exact dates, though the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 3000 said employees were told the closures would come in mid-October. In July, Kroger also announced plans to close a QFC in Mill Creek in September.
“Unfortunately, due to a steady rise in theft and a challenging regulatory environment that adds significant costs, we can no longer make these stores financially viable,” Kroger spokesperson Tiffany Sanders said in a statement.
Employees at the affected locations will be offered transfers to other stores, the company confirmed. The Cincinnati-based grocer operates more than 2,700 locations in 35 states.
