A Skagit County family is mourning the sudden loss of a devoted husband and father remembered for his generosity, loyalty, and love for the outdoors.

Richard Horne, 36, of Sedro-Woolley, died Wednesday, August 13, in what loved ones describe as a sudden, freak accident. A cause of death was not given.

The tragedy has left his wife of 12 years, Crystal, their 11-year-old daughter, Zoie, and stepdaughter Rachel — who recently welcomed Richard’s first grandchild — facing an unimaginable loss.

“Richard loved his family and friends fiercely. Everything he did was for his family,” wrote longtime family friend Genevieve Wolf, who organized a GoFundMe campaign to support the Hornes.

Horne, described as hardworking and deeply caring, found joy in camping and hiking with his family, working on his home and property, and lending a hand on projects for relatives.

“Everyone who knew Richard loved him,” Wolf wrote. “He was one of the kindest, most generous, hardworking, loyal, and caring people I have ever met. In one moment, the life of everyone who knew him was devastated.”

The fundraiser aims to ease the financial strain as the family navigates the overwhelming grief of his loss. Wolf emphasized that while nothing can replace Richard, the community can help his loved ones “have one less thing to worry about as they pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.”

Funeral services for Richard were held Saturday, Aug. 30, in Everson. Those who wish to support the family can do so via GoFundMe here.
