A familiar voice on Port Townsend radio is asking for help making her dream of stable housing a reality.
Anna Brown, better known to listeners of KPTZ as “DJ Goodwoman,” has launched a fundraiser to help her purchase and set up a tiny home in Port Townsend.
Brown, a radio DJ and volunteer who also lends her time to the Port Townsend Film Festival, local youth theater, and nonprofits, said that years of unstable housing have made it difficult to fully participate in the community she loves.
“It is a real struggle to be civically and culturally involved when you have unstable housing,” Brown wrote on her GoFundMe. “I am exhausted from the housing instability. I’m a proud citizen, and I want to make this place my forever home.”
Thanks to the support of friends, Brown has secured a down payment and a place to park her new manufactured tiny home. Now she’s raising $10,000 to cover finishing costs, including skirting, stairs, gutters, permits, and essentials like a refrigerator, washer and dryer, and a wood stove.
The 392-square-foot home, with a loft and porch, meets city and state standards for tiny houses. Brown said owning it will actually cost less than her current rent, freeing her to give back more to Port Townsend.
Supporters are spreading the word. On the Port Townsend Community Facebook page, resident Dana Sullivan urged locals to step in: “Keep DJ Goodwoman on the air and off the streets! … The house is tiny, and your donation could be too, if enough join in.”
Brown, who has hosted Musical Fruit since 2020, is known for her eclectic playlists, offbeat commentary, and a show that promises everything from rhythm and soul to tarot readings. “Dreams do come true,” she wrote in her KPTZ bio, reflecting on a childhood wish to one day be on the radio.
Now she’s hoping another dream — a permanent home — will come true with the community’s support.
“I want to grow a garden, volunteer at the fairgrounds and with youth organizations, join a softball team, and so many other things, she said. “But in order to do that, I need to get out of survival mode.”
