A man died after an overnight shooting in Ferndale, and a suspect was arrested hours later following a multi-agency manhunt.

Officers responded to the 2300 block of Ferndale Terrace around 3:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, after receiving reports of a shooting, according to the Ferndale Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, police said.

Authorities said the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

Around 8:52 a.m., a person matching the suspect’s description was spotted on Sucia Drive in the Sandy Point area, according to police.

Deputies with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Lummi Nation Police Department, Bellingham Police Department, Washington State Patrol, and US Border Patrol responded to the area and identified the individual as the suspect connected to the shooting, police said. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Ferndale police thanked the assisting agencies for their coordinated response.

The investigation remains active, and no additional information has been released.
