A 16-year-old boy who died after his vehicle went off a steep embankment near Gig Harbor on Wednesday evening has been identified.

Daniel Hallstrom died from blunt head and torso trauma, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. His manner of death was ruled an accident.

The crash occurred Wednesday evening near the 5600 block of 98th Avenue Northwest, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Hallstrom was driving home when he failed to negotiate a corner while traveling at a high rate of speed. His vehicle left the roadway and went down a steep embankment.

The vehicle was found heavily damaged in a ravine about 100 yards below the roadway, Gig Harbor Fire officials said.

The Peninsula School District said Hallstrom had previously attended Gig Harbor High School but was not enrolled at the school at the time of the crash.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the student’s family, friends, and teachers,” Gig Harbor High School Principal Bob Marshall wrote in a message to families.

Marshall said school counselors, teachers, and administrators are available to support those affected by the loss.

Additional details about Hallstrom’s life were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing michael@pugetpress.com.
