Dungeon Crawler Carl, the wildly popular fantasy series created by Gig Harbor author Matt Dinniman, is headed to television.
Dinniman announced the news Thursday, telling fans that Peacock has officially greenlit the television adaptation.
The project is being developed with writer Chris Yost and producer Seth MacFarlane’s production company, Fuzzy Door, with work now underway on the series.
“I’m happy to announce that our friends at Peacock have officially greenlit the Dungeon Crawler Carl television series!” Dinniman said in a statement. “Me, Chris Yost and Seth MacFarlane and his team at Fuzzy Door are all really excited to get to work.”
Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks, Dinniman said.
The announcement marks another major milestone for a franchise that has grown from a self-published novel into one of the biggest success stories in modern independent fantasy publishing.
What Is Dungeon Crawler Carl?
For those unfamiliar with the series, Dungeon Crawler Carl begins with a simple premise that quickly spirals into complete chaos.
After aliens destroy Earth’s surface, surviving humans are forced into a deadly, galaxy-wide reality show known as the World Dungeon. The story follows Carl and his cat, Princess Donut, as they battle monsters, navigate absurd challenges, and somehow try to survive while billions watch.
The books blend fantasy, science fiction, video game mechanics, dark humor, and nonstop action. Fans often describe the series as equal parts apocalypse, role-playing game, and comedy.
That unusual formula has helped turn Dungeon Crawler Carl into a publishing phenomenon.
The series has amassed a devoted fan base, dominated audiobook charts, and become one of the most recognizable titles in the rapidly growing “litRPG” genre, which combines traditional storytelling with game-like progression systems.
The audiobooks, narrated by Jeff Hays, have developed a particularly passionate following, with many readers crediting the performances for helping propel the franchise into mainstream popularity.
From Self-Published Novel To Streaming Series
Chris Yost, known for writing major Marvel projects including Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, is attached as writer and executive producer.
Peacock has not yet announced a release date, casting information, or production timeline.
“If you’re going to [San Diego Comic-Con] be sure to catch me and Chris on our DCC panel,” Dinniman wrote. “In the meantime I wanted to thank you, the fans, for helping make this happen.”
For fans of Carl, Princess Donut, and the increasingly ridiculous dungeon they call home, Thursday’s announcement felt less like a plot twist and more like the next level.
Achievement unlocked.
