A Bellingham family is asking for the community’s support as their 11-year-old pug, Simba, recovers from emergency surgery after losing an eye in a dog attack.
Simba, described by his family as a “lovable” companion, was bitten in the eye by another dog earlier this month, owner Lola Reed said.
He was rushed into emergency veterinary care, where surgeons removed the injured eye and stitched the lid shut.
Now partially blind, Simba is struggling to adapt to his new disability. On top of that, he also suffers from laryngeal paralysis — a common condition in pugs that affects the throat and makes breathing difficult.
The emergency bills and rehabilitation costs are overwhelming, said Reed, who works at Blythe Mechanical. Her online fundraiser seeks to help cover Simba’s surgery, follow-up appointments, and recovery care.
“Unfortunately, our pet recently suffered a severe eye injury, resulting in the loss of an eye,” Reed wrote on the fundraising page. “He is currently struggling to adapt to partial blindness. Any support is greatly appreciated.”
In an update Sunday, Aug. 17, Reed said Simba is slowly healing: “Simba has his two-week checkup tomorrow. Hoping to get the stitches removed. He is off the pain medication.”
Despite the ordeal, the family is hopeful. With rehabilitation and community support, they believe Simba can regain comfort and stability in his golden years.
