A 2-year-old Tacoma boy has died days after first responders found him unresponsive in a downtown apartment, triggering a homicide investigation.

Officers were called around 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 to the area of St. Helens Avenue near Division Avenue after firefighters responded to a report of a child who was not breathing, according to Tacoma Police.

When officers arrived, they began investigating possible child abuse after the explanation given by the adult male caring for the boy did not match what firefighters and officers observed, police said. The child was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.

Detectives arrested the man who had been watching the child on suspicion of first-degree assault that same day.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the boy died at the hospital. Detectives have since reclassified the case as a homicide investigation. No other details were given.
