Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.
Brendon died in his sleep of natural causes on Friday, March 20, according to a statement shared by his family with The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” his family said in a statement.
Brendon rose to fame playing Xander, the loyal and often comedic sidekick on Buffy, appearing in all seven seasons of the influential television series.
Over the years, he built a broader career in television and film, including a recurring role on Criminal Minds and appearances in projects such as Kitchen Confidential. He also starred in the film Psycho Beach Party, which developed a cult following after its release.
“In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” his family said. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”
Born Nicholas Brendnan Schultz in Los Angeles in 1971, Brendon initially pursued baseball before turning to acting, in part to help manage a stutter he experienced growing up. He later became an advocate for others dealing with speech disorders.
Brendon also faced well-documented personal struggles, including substance abuse and mental health challenges, which led to multiple arrests over the years. He later spoke publicly about those issues and sought treatment.
His family said he had been focused on his health in recent years and remained hopeful about the future.
“While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” the family said.
Alyson Hannigan, who portrayed Willow on Buffy, penned an emotional Instagram post shortly after news of this death broke, writing: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP”
Brendon is survived by his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, who appeared alongside him in episodes of Buffy.
