A Tacoma mother is keeping a constant vigil at her son’s hospital bedside after he was critically injured in a crash while riding his scooter home from work.
Qwinten Russell was struck by a vehicle Friday night, March 20, and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, where he remains in intensive care, according to a GoFundMe organized by family friend Nikko Olajoyegbe.
His mother, Amy Russell, has not left his side since the crash, the fundraiser states.
“My dear friend… is living every parent’s worst nightmare,” Olajoyegbe wrote.
Olajoyegbe described Amy as a devoted single mother of two who has long been active in the community, teaching yoga at the YMCA and building connections through her work in banking.
“She has spent her life showing up for others; now, it is time for us to show up for her,” Olajoyegbe wrote.
As Qwinten fights to recover, Amy has stepped away from work to be with him while continuing to support her younger son, Trey, according to the fundraiser.
“If you know Amy, you know her heart,” Olajoyegbe said. “If you don’t, please trust that she is someone who has always given her all to those around her.”
Supporters say the sudden crisis has created financial strain as medical care and everyday expenses continue to mount. Organizers are asking the community to help ease that burden so Amy can remain focused on her son’s recovery.
“Any support helps lift the financial burden so she can focus entirely on what matters most: Qwinten’s recovery.”
