A fast-moving house fire in north Everett left two people dead Sunday morning, April 12.
Multiple callers reported smoke coming from a residence in the 3800 block of Wetmore Avenue in the Port Gardner neighborhood around 8 a.m., according to the Everett Fire Department. Crews arrived just over one minute after dispatch and encountered an active fire inside the home.
Firefighters entered the home and located a man and woman believed to be in their 70s. Emergency medical personnel began lifesaving efforts, but both were pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.
The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes.
The Everett Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin and cause of the fire. The Everett Police Department is conducting a death investigation, which is standard in fatal incidents.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner will confirm the identities of the victims and determine the cause and manner of death.
“Everett Fire extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic incident,” the agency said online.
Additional details about the victims were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing michael@pugetpress.com.
Officials also reminded residents that working smoke alarms are critical for early warning in a fire. The department offers free smoke alarm installation for seniors, low-income residents, and people with disabilities.
