A 2-year-old girl has died after a suspected drunk driving crash in Auburn that seriously injured a second child.

The crash happened Monday night, April 27, in the Lea Hill area near 104th Avenue Southeast and Green River Road Southeast when a vehicle slammed into a tree, according to the Auburn Police Department.

Three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash: an adult woman and two children, ages 2 and 8. Both children were seriously injured and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

In an update Tuesday afternoon, April 27, police confirmed the 2-year-old girl died from her injuries. The 8-year-old remains hospitalized.

The adult female driver was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of DUI and did not appear to have significant injuries, according to police. Following the child’s death, investigators said the driver now faces charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

The roadway was closed in both directions for several hours between Lea Hill Road and Green River Road while investigators processed the scene.

The department’s traffic unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
