Alaska Airlines officially launched daily nonstop service between Seattle and London Heathrow on Thursday, marking another major step in the airline’s push into international travel.
The inaugural flight departed from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport following a gate celebration, opening Alaska’s newest year-round transatlantic route just ahead of the busy summer travel season.
The new service connects Seattle directly with Heathrow Airport, one of Europe’s busiest international hubs.
Alaska Expands Its European Reach
The London route is Alaska Airlines’ second European destination added this year. Last month, the Seattle-based carrier launched its first-ever nonstop transatlantic flights to Rome. On May 28, Alaska plans to begin seasonal nonstop service to Reykjavík, Iceland.
“As we connect the West Coast to Europe in new ways, our focus is on delivering a meaningful experience that feels distinctly Alaska,” Andrew Harrison, Alaska Airlines’ chief commercial officer, said in a statement. “For our guests in the U.S., we’re opening more convenient access to Europe with the airline they know and love.”
The airline said London is currently the largest intercontinental travel market out of Seattle, with more than 400 passengers traveling between the two cities daily.
What Travelers Can Expect
The Seattle-to-London route will operate out of Heathrow’s Terminal 3 and use Alaska’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The planes feature 34 enclosed international business-class suites with lie-flat seats designed for long-haul travel.
Listing some of the onboard perks, Alaska said premium travelers will receive Filson-designed bedding, Salt & Stone amenity kits, multi-course dining, and a customizable Salt & Straw dessert service.
The route is expected to appeal to both business travelers and vacationers, while also creating easier travel options for UK visitors heading to the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii through Alaska’s West Coast network.
Big Plans For Seattle
The international expansion also comes with major investments at Sea-Tac. Alaska Airlines announced plans for a massive new global lounge in Seattle scheduled to open in late 2027.
According to the airline, the new Alaska Lounge will span more than 41,000 square feet across two levels with approximately 700 seats, making it one of the largest airline lounges in the country.
The airline said the lounge will include showers, multiple premium bars, chef-curated dining, espresso beverages, and views of the Olympic Mountains and airfield.
A New Era For Alaska Airlines
The London launch reflects a broader shift for Alaska Airlines, which historically focused heavily on West Coast domestic routes before rapidly expanding internationally following its partnership integration with Hawaiian Airlines.
With nonstop service now connecting Seattle to Rome, London, Reykjavík, Seoul, and soon Tokyo again, the airline is positioning Seattle as a growing international gateway.
