A Snohomish County woman is seeking more than $1 million in damages after she allegedly slipped on spilled coconut oil inside a Lynnwood Walmart.

April Guzman filed the lawsuit against Walmart in Snohomish County Superior Court, alleging she was shopping at the retailer’s store on 164th Street Southwest in June 2024 when she fell in the cosmetics department.

According to the complaint, Guzman was walking through the hair color aisle when she slipped on what was described as coconut oil that had spilled onto the floor. The lawsuit alleges there were no warning signs posted around the spill.

Guzman claims she struck her right knee and landed on her back and buttocks during the fall. She was later transported to Swedish Mill Creek Emergency Center for treatment.

The lawsuit accuses Walmart of failing to maintain safe conditions for shoppers and alleges employees failed to promptly clean the spill or warn customers about the hazard.

Walmart has denied liability and recently moved the case from Snohomish County Superior Court to federal court.

Damages Top $1 Million

The most eye-catching aspect of the case may be the amount of money at stake. In a statement of damages filed by her attorney, Guzman lists approximately $7,300 in medical and mileage expenses.

Her attorney argues the larger impact stems from what the lawsuit describes as ongoing physical and emotional effects.

“Plaintiff suffered injuries to her low back, pelvis, hip, cervical and lumbar spine, and right knee, together with ongoing migraines and anxiety, pain and suffering (past, present, and future), emotional and mental distress, loss and/or impairment of her capacity and ability to enjoy life and its pleasures,” the filing states.

The filing goes on to estimate that “general damages in the range of $1,000,000.00 would not be unreasonable” if awarded by a jury.
