Loved ones in Mason County are mourning the unexpected loss of a man who died after felling from a rooftop terrace in California.

Nate Comfort died on April 26, at the age of 38, according to his obituary.

Family members spoke openly about Comfort’s long struggle with substance abuse, describing addiction as a powerful disease despite his efforts to overcome it.

“Nate was a bright, creative, and affable person who struggled with drug addiction,” his obituary states. “He tried very hard to get well, but the disease of drug addiction is powerful.”

Relatives went on to urge people to “please show compassion to those who also suffer from this terrible disease.”

Comfort leaves behind a son in addition to parents, siblings, and an extended family, his memorial states. He was remembered for his sense of humor, energy, and devotion to those around him.

“Nate will be remembered for his laughter, his boundless energy, and his loving heart,” the obituary states.

Among those paying tribute was the McKillop family, who remembered Comfort as a longtime friend of their son.

“We have many wonderful memories of Nate,” the family wrote on his online memorial page. “He was part of our family for years as a good friend to our son Riley. He will be remembered as a smart, funny and sweet person.”

Comfort is survived by his son, Karsen; his parents, Brian and Wendy; his sister, Claire; his brother, Trent, and sister-in-law Allison; Karsen’s mother, Draea; and nephews Reid and Miles. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Harvey.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 25 at Christ Lutheran Church in Belfair.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Long Beach in Comfort’s honor, according to his obituary.
