Sharon Stone says a major medical decision she made during a frightening health scare ultimately brought her marriage to an end.

The Oscar-nominated actress recently recalled how her then-husband reacted after doctors urged her to undergo surgery for a large breast tumor, a moment she says marked the beginning of the end of their relationship.

Speaking on the June 1 episode of The Person Who Believed in Me podcast, Stone said doctors urged her to undergo the procedure because they believed the tumor was likely cancerous.

“One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast,” Stone said of the tumor.

Stone said her doctor warned that tumors of that size often prove to be cancerous and recommended removing both breasts.

Despite initially struggling to accept the possibility of a cancer diagnosis, Stone said she ultimately chose to proceed with the surgery.

“I am deciding that I will have a bilateral, because I’m not f—ing around,” Stone said.

According to Stone, her husband – who she did not name – strongly opposed the decision.

“My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous,’” Stone said. “And got up and left the room.”

When asked what her husband found ridiculous, Stone said he was angry about the surgery itself.

“He was furious,” Stone said.

Stone recalled that her doctor challenged her husband’s reaction and defended her decision.

“‘If I had more patients like her, we’d have more women alive today. You need to sit down,’” the doctor told him, according to Stone.

The actress said the moment effectively ended the marriage.

“That was the end of the marriage,” Stone said. “That was it. He was done with me then. It was over.”

“He thought I was ridiculous,” she added. “He thought it was foolish. He thought I was making too many decisions myself.”

Stone did not identify the husband during the interview. She was married to journalist Phil Bronstein from 1998 until their divorce in 2004. She was previously married to television producer Michael Greenburg from 1984 to 1990.

Fortunately, Stone said the tumors were ultimately determined to be benign.

Now 68, Stone has often spoken publicly about health challenges she has faced throughout her life, including a near-fatal stroke in 2001.

The actress remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, known for her roles in Basic Instinct, Casino, Total Recall, The Quick and the Dead, Sliver, and The Muse.
