One person is dead and four others are seriously injured after a car slammed into a Grocery Outlet store in Kirkland.

Emergency crews responded to the Bridle Trails Shopping Center on 32nd Avenue NE just before 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, after reports of a vehicle crashing through the store’s front doors, Kirkland Police said.

Images from the scene showed the car lodged inside the entryway with shelving and debris collapsed on top of it.

Authorities said the driver and three bystanders—a juvenile and two women—were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. A fifth victim died on the way to the hospital.

The deceased victim’s age and identity had not been released as of Sunday night.

According to Kirkland Public Safety, the driver was elderly.

Firefighters and paramedics from Kirkland, Redmond, and Bellevue assisted at the scene, treating victims and clearing the wreckage.

“On behalf of the Kirkland Police Department, I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who passed away,” said Police Chief Cherie Harris. “Our thoughts are also with those who were injured and with everyone impacted by this tragic incident.”

The Kirkland Police Department is leading the investigation into what caused the crash.
