Emergency crews responded to the Snohomish County Courthouse in Everett after around 20 people were potentially exposed to suspected fentanyl residue inside a courtroom during a trial.

The incident unfolded late Thursday morning, Feb. 19, prompting a significant response from Everett Fire and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, according to fire officials.

Authorities later clarified that the exposure occurred in a second-floor courtroom. Occupants were relocated to the fourth floor of the courthouse for medical evaluation while the affected courtroom was temporarily closed.

Fire personnel assessed everyone out of an abundance of caution. No individuals were showing symptoms at the time of the response, Everett Fire said.

Emergency crews remained on scene to support evaluations and ensure the safety of courthouse occupants while officials continued coordinating next steps.

Further details about the suspected substance and the circumstances surrounding the exposure were not immediately available.
