Three Whatcom County communities are standing out in new 2026 rankings, earning top marks for livability, schools, and overall quality of life, according to Niche.
The rankings highlight a mix of urban energy, suburban comfort, and rural appeal — with each community offering a different lifestyle depending on what residents value most.
No. 1 – Bellingham Balances Lifestyle And Access
Bellingham earned an overall grade of A-, driven by strong marks in outdoor activities, nightlife, and health and fitness. The city of about 93,000 residents offers a blend of urban and suburban living, with easy access to parks, waterfront views, and a busy downtown.
It scored especially high in weather, outdoor recreation, and commute times, while public schools also received high marks.
Housing and cost of living remain challenges. The median home value is about $627,500, with median rent around $1,577. Median household income sits below the national average at roughly $66,755.
No. 2 – Geneva Stands Out For Quiet, High-Income Living
Geneva, a smaller community with just over 2,000 residents, also earned an overall grade of A-. The area is known for its rural feel, access to nature, and strong school ratings.
The community posted top marks in outdoor activities and health, along with high scores for family-friendliness. Median household income is notably high at about $142,188.
Housing costs are among the highest on the list, with median home values around $801,100 and rent near $1,795.
No. 3 – Sudden Valley Offers Affordability With Nature Access
Sudden Valley rounded out the top three with an overall grade of B+. The community of about 6,000 residents offers a quieter, more rural setting while still maintaining strong scores in schools and outdoor access.
Median home values are lower than the other top-ranked areas at about $489,200, though rent remains similar at roughly $1,816. Median household income is around $100,930.
The area scored well in health, outdoor recreation, and overall livability.
