Tacoma’s New Katsu Burger Spot Goes All-In On Crispy Chaos

These burgers come breaded, fried, stacked with curry mayo and tonkatsu sauce, and occasionally topped with pineapple, fried eggs, or enough spice to earn the name “Godzilla Attack.”

Katsu Burger, which recently held its soft opening at 2805 6th Ave., brings the Seattle-born Japanese fusion chain’s signature deep-fried katsu burgers to Tacoma — and early customers already seem fully onboard with the experience.

At its core, a katsu burger takes the familiar American burger format and runs it through Japanese comfort-food logic. The patties — whether beef, chicken, pork, or tofu — are breaded, fried until crisp, then layered with sauces like tonkatsu, Japanese mayo, curry mayo, or wasabi mayo.

The result is crunchy, messy, salty, rich, and very much not trying to be subtle.

The Vibe Feels More Bar Hangout Than Fast Food

Inside, customers describe the Tacoma location as spacious, clean, and energetic without feeling chaotic. One Yelp reviewer said the restaurant has “a bar vibe,” though it remains open to all ages. Another praised the roomy dining area, noting that even when busy, “it won’t feel crowded.”

Ordering happens through self-serve kiosks displaying photos of the menu items — probably a wise move considering some of the burgers look like they were engineered during a dare.

And honestly, that’s part of the appeal. Katsu Burger doesn’t feel overly polished or corporate. It feels like a place designed for cravings.

The Burgers Are The Main Event

The menu leans heavily into fried textures and bold sauces. The Tokyo Classic keeps things relatively straightforward with a crispy beef katsu patty, tonkatsu sauce, and Japanese mayo.

Then things escalate. The Samurai Select adds bacon, pineapple, and wasabi mayo. The Ohayou Gozaimasu stacks a fried egg and bacon onto crispy beef katsu. The Godzilla Attack arrives dusted in house-made 12 spice seasoning with jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, and spicy mayo.

And then there’s the Mt. Fuji. That one somehow combines beef katsu, chicken katsu, pork katsu, bacon, egg, three cheeses, wasabi mayo, spicy mayo, and tonkatsu sauce into a single burger situation.

Customers also seem hooked on the fries, especially the 12 Spice Fries and Curry Fries. One Yelp reviewer specifically shouted out the “Godzilla burger awesome and 12 spice fries with curry sauce yum.”

Another reviewer admitted they were still “amazed at how a burger that looks so huge goes down so well.”

Fried, Crispy, And Proud Of It

Katsu Burger makes no attempt to pretend this is health food. In fact, one Yelp customer joked that the restaurant felt like the perfect place to revisit “after I’ve had a few strong beers and want to drunk crush some food.”

That self-awareness is part of what makes the concept work. The restaurant openly leans into indulgence while still emphasizing ingredient quality. According to its website, the burgers use 100% natural beef, non-GMO chicken and pork, organic tofu, and sauces made fresh daily.

Even the sides carry the same Japanese-inspired twist. There are nori fries topped with roasted seaweed flakes, Japanese croquettes called korokke, wasabi coleslaw, and bite-sized fried pork or chicken called Banzai Bites.

For Tacoma’s already eclectic Sixth Avenue food scene, Katsu Burger slides in naturally — loud, fried, slightly chaotic, and very aware of exactly what it wants to be.
