Washington shoppers likely won’t be affected by a newly announced recall involving certain Kroger cheese garlic croutons linked to a potential Salmonella contamination risk, though the recall spans 17 states across the Midwest and South.

Sugar Foods LLC announced the recall after learning milk powder used in the croutons’ seasoning blend may have been contaminated, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The affected product is Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons sold in 5-ounce pouches with UPC code 0 11110 81353 4.

Washington was not included among the states listed for distribution, according to the recall notice.

The recalled products were distributed to Kroger stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

The issue traces back to a supplier recall involving milk powder produced by California Dairies, Inc. and later used by seasoning supplier Solina USA.

Sugar Foods said the seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella before being used on the croutons, but the company initiated the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

No illnesses have been reported.

Salmonella infections can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Severe infections are more likely in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The recalled products carry the following “best if used by” dates:

  • FEB 17 27
  • FEB 18 27
  • FEB 27 27
  • FEB 28 27
  • MAR 6 27
  • MAR 9 27
  • MAR 21 27
