A former Olympic canoeist has been indicted by a grand jury in Washington, D.C., after his arrest last month at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, CNN reports.
David Hearn, a former Olympian who competed for Canada in canoe sprint events, was indicted in D.C. Superior Court following the June incident, according to the outlet. The exact charges were not immediately available.
Hearn’s attorney said he was not yet aware of the indictment and noted that his client had previously received a citation carrying lesser misdemeanor charges.
Hearn was arrested after reaching into the Reflecting Pool, which had reopened just weeks earlier following a multimillion-dollar renovation ordered by President Donald Trump.
Hearn previously told reporters he noticed a flap of blue material that had partially detached from the bottom of the pool and reached into the water out of curiosity.
A National Park Service employee warned him not to touch the material before U.S. Park Police handcuffed him, according to Hearn.
Hearn denied damaging the pool and said he did not intend to vandalize the landmark.
The Reflecting Pool sits between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument and is one of the nation’s most recognizable memorial sites. The recent renovation project included extensive repairs to the pool’s infrastructure and liner.
Court records detailing the indictment had not been released as of Thursday.
