Yankee Candle announced Friday it is expanding its Pacific Northwest Collection with a new fragrance inspired by one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks: the Tacoma Aroma.
The limited-edition candle, called “Tacoma Aroma: Industrial Sunset,” is described as featuring “bold notes of low tide, hardworking industry, mysterious sulfur, and just a whisper of optimism.”
Company executives said the scent was developed after years of customer requests for “something that smells exactly like rolling down your windows for two seconds while driving through the Tideflats.”
“It’s not for everyone,” said a fictional Yankee Candle spokesperson. “But neither is Tacoma, and that’s what makes it special.”
Candle Includes Authentic Driving Experience
According to the product description, the candle begins with subtle hints of saltwater before evolving into “an unmistakable bouquet that causes passengers to immediately ask, ‘What is that smell?'”
For maximum realism, the label recommends burning the candle while sitting in your parked car with the heater on and someone in the passenger seat insisting, “No, seriously… I think something died.”
Engineers reportedly spent 18 months recreating the precise moment drivers instinctively check whether they accidentally stepped in something.
The “Tacoma Aroma” nickname has been associated with the city for decades and historically referred to odors from industrial activity around the Tideflats, although the smell has become far less common over the years following environmental improvements and the closure of the WestRock paper mill in 2023.
Tacoma Residents Defend the Fragrance
Reaction from locals was immediate.
“We’re tired of people making fun of the aroma,” said one lifelong city resident. “Only we get to make fun of the aroma.”
Others insisted outsiders simply “don’t appreciate the complexity.”
“It’s layered,” another imaginary resident explained. “You get notes of Commencement Bay, working waterfront, and the faint scent of someone merging across four lanes of I-5 without using a turn signal.”
Collectors Already Driving Prices Higher
Within hours of the announcement, satirical online resellers were reportedly listing the candle for $349 under the description:
“Discontinued. Smelled once. Never lit.”
One seller claimed the candle had been “hand-poured during an east wind.”
Another promised each candle included “a free existential crisis while crossing the Tacoma Dome exit at rush hour.”
At press time, Yankee Candle was reportedly testing additional Washington-inspired scents, including:
- “Bellevue HOA Meeting”
- “Everett Casino Parking Lot at 2 a.m.”
- “North Bend Trailhead Restroom on Labor Day Weekend”
