Three Kitsap County public school districts received overall grades ranging from B to C+ in Niche’s 2027 evaluations, the lowest marks among the five districts in its county listing.

The category grades show where those report cards diverge. One district earned an A− for college prep alongside a C for clubs and activities. Another received the highest diversity grade of the three while earning their lowest academics grade.

Niche’s district methodology draws on several kinds of evidence, including state test results, teacher data and feedback from students and parents.

The grades are Niche’s own evaluations. The reading and math percentages below are state-test proficiency figures displayed on its district profiles. The profiles don’t specify the testing year alongside those figures.

North Kitsap School District — Overall Niche Grade B

College prep earned an A− on Niche’s North Kitsap report card, the district’s highest category grade. Clubs and activities and food both received a C.

The Poulsbo-based district serves about 5,330 students from preschool through 12th grade in communities including Kingston and Suquamish.

Math Proficiency Was Closest to 50%

Niche lists 57% reading proficiency and 49% math proficiency for North Kitsap. That puts math eight percentage points below reading, the smallest gap among the three featured profiles.

North Kitsap’s 19-to-1 student-teacher ratio was the highest of the three and about four students per teacher above the national public-school ratio of 15.2 to 1 in 2023–24. The national figure gives a staffing benchmark.

Technical Training Beyond the High School Campus

The district’s career and technical education program points students toward options in North Kitsap schools, at Olympic College and at West Sound Technical Skills Center.

At the Bremerton center, eligible North Kitsap juniors and seniors can take free off-campus training in fields such as automotive technology, culinary arts and health care.

For students interested in one of those programs, the practical questions are when they can start and how the off-campus schedule fits with their remaining graduation requirements.

South Kitsap School District — Overall Niche Grade B−

Diversity and college prep both earned B+ on Niche’s South Kitsap report card, the district’s highest category grades. Its academics grade was a B, and food received a C.

Based in Port Orchard, South Kitsap serves students from preschool through 12th grade. Niche lists 9,326 students, the largest enrollment among the three featured districts.

Same Reading Figure as North Kitsap, Lower Math Figure

Niche reports 57% reading proficiency and 44% math proficiency for South Kitsap. Its displayed reading figure matches North Kitsap’s, while its math figure is five percentage points lower.

South Kitsap’s 17-to-1 student-teacher ratio is about two students per teacher above the national public-school benchmark.

The district’s strategic plan offers a more detailed look at math by setting separate goals for third, seventh and 10th grades. At the plan’s June 2023 baseline, South Kitsap’s third and seventh graders were ahead of their respective statewide math proficiency figures, while its 10th graders were below theirs.

That’s a reason to check results for the grade a child is entering, even when the districtwide figure is the one that gets attention.

English-Language Support Across the District

South Kitsap says its multilingual learner program offers support at every district school. A screener covering listening, speaking, reading and writing helps staff determine what services a student needs.

The district also publishes service information by grade, giving families a way to see what support is available before asking how it fits into the school day.

Bremerton School District — Overall Niche Grade C+

Bremerton had the widest spread of category grades among the three featured districts. Niche’s Bremerton report card shows an A for diversity, a B+ for sports and C grades for academics and administration.

The district serves about 4,383 students in Bremerton from preschool through 12th grade.

The Lowest Proficiency Figures and the Closest Staffing Ratio

Niche lists 38% reading proficiency and 27% math proficiency for Bremerton, the lowest figures shown for either subject among the three featured profiles. Math was 11 percentage points below reading.

Bremerton’s 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio was the closest of the three to the national public-school benchmark, at about one additional student per teacher.

The two measures answer different questions. The ratio describes districtwide staffing, while the proficiency figures describe the share of tested students who met the standard.

Boat Building, Broadcasting and Manufacturing

Bremerton’s career and technical education offerings include marine technology and boat building, advanced manufacturing, broadcast television and digital film production. Those are concrete options for a student who wants to explore a trade or see how an interest in engineering or media translates into coursework.

Families looking ahead to high school can check which courses are open to their student’s grade and whether an introductory course leads to more advanced work.

Where the Kitsap Report Cards Differ

In Niche’s five-district comparison, Bainbridge Island earned an A+ and Central Kitsap earned a B+. North Kitsap’s B was one step below Central Kitsap’s grade. There was no tie at the cutoff for the three lowest grades.

The category comparisons are more specific. Bremerton earned higher marks than both North and South Kitsap for teachers, clubs and activities, and resources and facilities.

North Kitsap received the strongest college prep grade of the three. North and South Kitsap had the same grades in five categories, including teachers and diversity.

The overall grades put the districts in order, but the category grades show how often that order changes depending on what a family is looking for.

For a closer look at academics, use the Washington State Report Card to check the school your child would attend. Look for the latest results in the relevant grade, then ask how the school responds when students fall behind.

For programs, check what’s available at that campus and whether students need to travel, meet a prerequisite or fit a course into a particular year. Those details can turn a broad report card into a useful school comparison.
