Detectives arrested a 35-year-old Lynden man accused of raping and robbing a woman at Little Squalicum Park in Bellingham.
The attack happened the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 20, when deputies responded to a report of a rape and robbery involving a 48-year-old victim, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
A large search, including drones and K-9 units, was launched but the suspect fled the area before he could be found.
Investigators said the victim reported being raped, bitten, and robbed of their wallet by a man armed with a knife. Both the knife and the wallet were later recovered at the scene.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Division immediately began investigating, reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and combing through community tips.
Evidence provided by residents, businesses, and the Bellingham Police Department helped detectives identify a suspect vehicle, which eventually led them to 35-year-old Joseph Drager of Lynden, sheriff’s officials said.
On Wednesday, Aug. 27, detectives and deputies located Drager leaving his home in the 7000 block of Guide Meridian and arrested him without incident, with assistance from the Lynden Police Department.
According to investigators, Drager admitted to changing his appearance after the incident. Search warrants executed at his home and vehicle turned up clothing allegedly worn during the attack and hair believed to have been cut in an attempt to alter his appearance.
Drager was booked on suspicion of first-degree rape, first-degree robbery, and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
“This heinous crime profoundly affects the victim and the victim’s family and shakes the community. We are proud of the work of our detectives in their dedication to solving this case and helping to bring justice and safety to the community,” said Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley.
“We also thank the agencies, businesses and residents who provided valuable information which led to the identification of the suspect.”
The investigation remains active.
