If you follow the scent of smoky, spiced pork drifting down Winslow Way, you might find yourself turning into a narrow walkway between two buildings.

The sidewalk sign simply reads “street tacos,” but what awaits at the end feels like a culinary teleportation straight to Mexico City.

At Bainbridge Tacos, the scene is casual and unmistakably authentic: a shaded tent shelters picnic tables, the hum of ferry traffic drifts over from the terminal just steps away, and the air carries the mouthwatering aroma of pork roasting on a vertical spit.

There’s no table service here—just walk up, order, and settle in for tacos worth the ferry ride.

The star of the show is their tacos al pastor, a Mexico City classic done right. Pork marinated with achiote and spices spins slowly on a trompo, the outer edges crisping before being sliced thin and topped with sweet grilled pineapple, diced onions, and fresh cilantro.

Each bite is a punch of smoky, savory, and bright flavors, all wrapped in warm, freshly made corn tortillas. The tortas are just as tempting—pillowy bread stacked with juicy meat and fresh toppings.

Locals and day-trippers alike can’t stop talking about it. “Best tacos ever!!!” one Yelp reviewer raves. “Make sure to try the Al Pastor ones. A slice of pineapple did it for me. These are amazing!” Another regular sums it up with a smile: “Legit street tacos! Quite surprising actually for such a white yuppie tourist area.”

Even the “hidden” nature of Bainbridge Tacos has become part of its charm. As one fan put it, “Definitely a little hidden on the street but so glad we found it. Lots of seating and space.”

So next time you’re stepping off the ferry or wandering downtown Bainbridge Island, follow your nose—and the sign—to the back patio. There, under the tent, you’ll discover what the locals already know: these aren’t just tacos, they’re a little slice of Mexico City in the Pacific Northwest.

Bainbridge Tacos is located at 440 Winslow Way East. They’re open Wednesday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Find out more on its website.
