A Washington State Patrol sergeant was injured after a pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into his patrol vehicle in Tacoma.

The crash happened around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, on Steele Street south of 112th Street South, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the collision involved a marked Washington State Patrol vehicle and a civilian pickup truck. The WSP sergeant was trapped inside his vehicle and suffered minor injuries, according to police.

The sergeant was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

Investigators determined the female driver of the pickup truck was texting and failed to stay in her lane, causing her vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic and strike the patrol vehicle head-on, police said.

The driver was not injured and remained at the scene. She was cited for negligent driving and released.

No other vehicles or injuries were reported. The investigation remains ongoing and will be forwarded to a prosecutor for review, according to the sheriff’s office.
