A simple, quiet act of respect caught on camera in Lake Stevens is now being honored as a powerful reminder of community pride.

Dillon Janz was recognized by Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue this week for stopping along his route on a windy March evening to properly care for a fallen American flag outside a Lake Stevens home.

Janz was working as a delivery driver on March 12 when he noticed the flag had come loose from its pole and was resting on the ground, as Puget Press reported.

“Without knowing any cameras were around, Dillon quietly stopped, picked the flag up, properly folded it, and placed it in a dignified location for the homeowner to retrieve,” fire officials said.

After setting it down, he paused, stepped back, and offered a solemn salute before continuing on his way.

Unbeknownst to Janz, the quiet moment was captured on a doorbell camera and later shared online by the homeowner. It quickly spread, drawing an outpouring of appreciation from the community.

Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue officials said the gesture carries a deeper meaning.

“We honor the colors and the men and women who have served to keep that flag flying,” the agency said. “When we saw the respect Dillon showed that night, we recognized the meaning behind his silent gesture.”

In recognition, Janz and his family were invited to Station 31 and a Board of Commissioners meeting, where he was formally honored. Fire Chief Park and commissioners presented the family with a folded department flag as a symbol of appreciation.

“To recognize him for his selfless service, civic pride, and the respect he demonstrated for the American flag, without expectation of recognition,” officials said.

“Thank you, Dillon, for reminding us all what respect and quiet service look like.”
