A filmmaker who says he was struck by gunfire during a triple shooting outside a Capitol Hill nightclub last month is now facing mounting medical bills, the loss of his job, and an uncertain road to recovery.

Seattle resident Ari Silaev was wounded during a shooting outside a nightclub in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood on May 18.

According to friends, Silaev had spent recent years building a life in the United States while creating films and online content focused on American travel destinations, innovation, and history.

Friends say he had recently begun work on a project examining the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and the origins of the American Dream.

Those plans came to an abrupt halt when he was shot in the leg during the violence.

Triple Shooting Erupted Outside Capitol Hill Nightclub

Seattle police said three men were shot outside a nightclub near 10th Avenue and East Pike Street shortly after 1 a.m. on May 18.

According to investigators, the shooting followed an altercation involving patrons and security outside the business.

Police said at least one suspect fired multiple rounds before three suspects fled the area.

Three men suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Authorities said two victims were listed in serious condition and one in critical condition following the shooting. Police later said all three victims were expected to survive.

The Seattle Police Department’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit continues to investigate the case. No arrests have been announced.

Recovery Brings New Challenges

In an update posted on GoFundMe June 19, Silaev said his recovery is progressing but remains difficult.

“I’m slowly adding some pressure on my leg, probably I’ll be able to walk in July-August,” he wrote.

Silaev said that the shooting has affected nearly every aspect of his life, forcing him to abandon work plans and creating significant financial strain while he remains unable to work.

He also said he lost both his job and housing following the shooting and is currently relying on donations while he recovers.

“Even $1500 check from the hospital (after the insurance) is not covered by anyone,” he wrote. “Hospital is refusing to provide financial assistance so far.”

Supporters Rally Around Filmmaker

The fundraiser describes Silaev as someone who moved to the United States several years ago and dedicated his work to documenting the country through filmmaking.

Friends who organized the campaign said they hope donations will help cover medical expenses, food, rent, transportation costs, and other necessities while he recovers.

The fundraiser also warns that the financial burden could jeopardize both his YouTube channel and future filmmaking projects.

Investigation Continues

Seattle police arrested 19-year-old Ja’Mari McQueen of Tacoma on May 22 after detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit used surveillance footage to identify him, according to the agency.

Prosecutors charged McQueen with three counts of first-degree assault in connection with the shooting. He is being held at the King County Jail on $1.5 million bail.

Investigators previously said cellphone video captured portions of the confrontation and gunfire.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Seattle Police Department Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.

For Silaev, however, the focus remains on healing.

More than a month after the shooting, he says he is making progress but still faces a long road back to normal life.
