PlayStation fans are threatening to abandon the brand after Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation releases beginning in January 2028.
PlayStation Moves Toward A Digital-Only Future
In a statement, Sony said all new games released after January 2028 will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers.
“This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” said Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications for Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Sony said the change will not affect games already released on disc or titles scheduled to launch before January 2028.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” Shuman said.
Sony also said it plans to continue offering players multiple ways to purchase digital games, whether directly through the PlayStation Store or through retailers that sell digital codes.
PS3 And PS Vita Stores Will Also Close
The announcement came alongside another major change. Sony said it will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store on older platforms, with the PlayStation 3 store closing in select Latin American markets starting in August 2026 and global closures for both the PS3 and PS Vita stores scheduled for July 2027.
After the closures, players will no longer be able to purchase new content on those devices, though Sony said previously purchased content will remain available for download “for the foreseeable future.”
Sony said aging hardware can no longer support the modern commerce systems and payment processing standards required by the PlayStation Store.
Gamers Push Back Over Ownership Concerns
The announcement triggered an immediate reaction online, where many players expressed concern about losing physical ownership and becoming fully dependent on digital storefronts.
“So long, PlayStation, it was fun while it lasted,” one Redditor wrote. “But if this is true, I won’t be part of it.”
“I need a law that makes digital library permanent and safe from destruction then I will be happy with this,” another user wrote on the PlayStation subreddit.
Others said the move could push them away from PlayStation entirely.
“PS5 is the end of the line for me then. Might as well get a PC for the next generation,” another user wrote.
Several commenters also questioned whether an all-digital future could attract regulatory scrutiny, particularly in Europe, where lawmakers have increasingly focused on digital marketplaces and consumer rights.
“Now there is no other way to buy games beside the PS Store. They may be forced to open it up by the EU,” one Reddit user wrote.
Many players argued that physical games offered benefits beyond nostalgia, including the ability to resell games, preserve collections and maintain access to titles even if digital stores eventually close.
“It’s the age of not owning anything,” another user wrote. “The saddest part is that this is happening because most ‘gamers’ are fine with that.”
While digital game sales have steadily grown for years, the announcement marks one of the biggest shifts in PlayStation’s nearly 31-year history and signals that the era of buying new PlayStation games on disc may soon come to an end.
