Ten-year-old Samson Curley of Aberdeen is beginning treatment for a rare form of leukemia, and his family says the support of their community means everything right now.
Samson was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma on Saturday, Aug. 30, after he began feeling unwell, according to a GoFundMe created by family friend Catrina Bean.
“After several tests it was determined that his red and white blood cell counts and platelets were very low,” Bean wrote.
Once admitted, Samson received blood transfusions to stabilize his levels. Doctors later diagnosed him with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a subtype of acute myeloid leukemia that affects the blood and bone marrow. Treatment will require two different medications and possibly more transfusions.
Loved ones describe Samson as a bright and caring boy. “He is such a sweet ten-year-old who loves to fish with dad, build Lego creations with mom, play video games with his older brother, and spend time with his grandparents and cousins,” Bean said.
Though he is scared and confused, Samson is resilient, Bean said. “He is a tough little dude, and once he receives treatment, he is going to kick leukemia’s butt.”
Samson is expected to remain hospitalized for at least a month while doctors closely monitor his progress. His parents, Jordan and Adelaide, plan to stay near him, which will mean travel expenses and time away from work.
“The family obviously wishes to be close to their son while he is in the hospital, which will require several travel expenses and leave of absences with their employers,” Bean explained.
Donations are being collected to help cover both medical costs and the family’s expenses while Samson undergoes treatment. Contributions can be made through the GoFundMe page here.
