Two US Navy fighter jets collided midair and crashed Sunday during an air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, forcing the event to shut down as stunned spectators watched parachutes descend from the sky.
Reports identified the aircraft as an F/A-18 Super Hornet and an EA-18G Growler participating in the Gunfighter Skies Air Show.
Videos circulating online showed the jets colliding during an aerial demonstration before crashing to the ground and erupting in flames.
Witnesses at the show reported seeing four parachutes deploy following the collision. According to multiple reports, all aircrew members ejected safely and survived the crash.
The collision happened about two miles northwest of the base during the second day of the air show.
“Emergency responders are on the scene, an investigation is underway and more details will be released as they become available,” a spokesperson for the base said.
Mountain Home police later announced the remainder of the air show had been canceled and urged the public to avoid the area.
The base is home to the US Air Force’s 366th Fighter Wing, also known as the “Gunfighters.”
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
